I did a home stay in Japan awhile ago, and I liked Kyoto and Osaka more than Tokyo. Also, go to the mountains, Nagano and Ueda were cool.

Japan is an amazing place. Helps if you can get on an exchange program where you have a host family. The Japanese are a ton of fun to hang out with.

I’ve only ever been to Tokyo besides and only for a couple days.

That is an option. Both of those cities are relatively close to eachother. Thanks!

No worries, and just a quick tip. Kyoto is a refined city, poetry, art, etc. Osaka is working class and let’s have some fun. You can have some great fun in Kyoto as well. Should be some cool bars there still.

Everything built post-WW2 in Japan is strictly functional. All the infrastructure looks great and it’s impressive mostly because it’s meticulously maintained and most man-made objects in Japan display an obsessive attention to detail.

Architectural diversity in modern Japan is a relatively recent thing, but for car-spotting you can’t beat this country. So many cars not sold in the RoW.

Hong Kong is a little more interesting on the infrastructure side. It’s probably the most vertical city in the world, with all the associated perks, quirks and nuisances. Nothing quite defines “high-rise slum” like certain run-down districts in Hong Kong. The downtown core displays a shockingly complete grade-separation of road, rail and pedestrian traffic.

For car-spotting Hong Kong is not on the level of Japan, but the concentration of expensive metal is impressive.
